She licks the whipped cream from Serina's finger, savoring it as Serina withdraws, her cheek flushed. Carolyn's tongue tingles. "It's good." A photograph of an open hard-cover book resting on a white surface. It's sunny and bright. A blurred-out background suggests the outdoors. Text over the image reads "Author interview! Meet Tris Lawrence." The Duck Prints Press logo is at the bottom middle of the image.

Meet Tris Lawrence! Tris has been with Duck Prints Press since our very first anthology, Add Magic to Taste, and is the author of multiple novels, including seven books of the Welcome to Pine Hills University series. We’re currently crowdfunding the second book of that series, Missed Fortunes, so what better time is there to get to know this awesome author?

About Tris Lawrence

Tris Lawrence has been writing since she was a child, filling notebooks with the worlds, dreams, and voices from inside her head. She declared in sixth grade that she wanted to be a writer, promptly started drafting her first novel in seventh grade, and never looked back.
Tris has always been fascinated by the way people work: how their relationships fit together, how they interact socially, how they learn and discover. She has read avidly her entire life, devouring mysteries, romances, science fiction, and fantasy novels, and as an adult still loves all of these genres. Her favorite stories center on people who are learning or discovering new things, and coming-of-age stories top that list, which is how Pine Hills University came to be. She wants to share stories of people who are learning how to relate to each other, how to adult, how to college, and how to just be. She hopes to share stories about diverse characters with representation of everything she wishes she could have read growing up, and she hopes that these stories will touch the lives and hearts of those who read them.
When not writing, Tris is a wife, a mother (to two children, two cats, and a dog), a knitter, a system administrator, a black belt in taekwondo, an avid reader, and a music aficionado. Sleep, she claims, is optional.

Head down, the wolf takes a step forward, fangs bared as it snarls. There's no place for Carolyn to go. Pre-order Missed Fortunes by Tris Lawrence thru Feb. 28 2025!

I’ll tell y’all honestly, with less than 4 days left in our pre-order campaign for Missed Fortunes by Tris Lawrence, I’m a little worried about us hitting our goal. We’re 60% funded, and need only about $800 to hit our overall goal. I know the middle book of a trilogy can be a hard sell – but consider, you could buy book 1 of Twinned instead – and that still counts toward our goal! And then, once you’re hooked, you can pick up book 2!

Today, we’re featuring another quote, in which our main character Carolyn is confronted by a predator straight out of a nightmare…

A photograph of scattered tarot cards, The Sun featured prominently showing a stylized sun with a face shining over a row of sunflowers and a naked child riding a horse. The cards are over a dark background, and there's text beside the images. The text reads, "Dad said you're twins." "We are twins, but we're predictive, not telepathic," Carolyn says. "She's predictive. I'm not," Kit adds. "Not possible. You're twins. You're both predictive or you're both not predictive." From Missed Fortunes by Tris Lawrence. Crowdfunding NOW through February 28 2025.

There’s one week left in the pre-order campaign for Missed Fortunes by Tris Lawrence, and we’re slightly shy of 50% of the way to our goal. We could really use your help making this campaign a success – even just signal boosting our posts goes a long way toward assisting us, as often the difference between a failed campaign and a successful one is people knowing about it. And what’s there to know about?

Missed Fortunes is the middle book of the Twinned trilogy, a series set at the fictional college Pine Hills University in a world similar to our own – except there’s magic! It’s been 10 years since humanity learned that people with Talent have long lived among them, and everyone is still adapting to this new reality and the ways it has changed everything. Meanwhile, twin siblings Carolyn (cis woman! asexual! biromantic!) and Kit (trans man! bisexual and biromantic!) are just trying to get through their junior year. It’d be easier if not for the cracks spreading around them, threatening that this ~new reality~ could bring all of reality crashing down around them…

Have we got your attention yet? Want to read more? We’re offering free samples of Missed Fortunes and also of Commit to the Kick, book 1 in the trilogy, starring aromantic gay shapeshifter Alaric and his twin Drea!

Don’t miss your chance to help us publish this awesome book – learn more about the campaign and order your copies of Commit to the Kick and Missed Fortunes now!

It shows a book cover featuring two people falling while a tower burns in the background, with the author, title, and "Twinned, Book 2" written on the cover. The cover is surrounded by arrows and book features: sapphic relationship; college setting; modern with magic, magic is known; asexual main character; tarot and predictive ability; and twins (one is trans!). At the bottom, text reads "Pre-order through February 28th!"

In the first book of the Twinned trilogy, Commit to the Kick, Tris Lawrence introduced readers to Alaric, a freshman at Pine Hills University. PHU is a small liberal arts college in a world similar to our own, but made very different by the long-hidden existence of people with Talents, and the more recent Emergence of Talented people into the public eye. Missed Fortunes, the middle book of the trilogy, continues where Alaric’s story left off. Carolyn, another student at PHU, has tried to keep her head down and avoid rocking the boat as the world has changed around her. But now, it will be her world that’s changing, and she won’t be able to stay uninvolved…

We’re running a pre-order campaign for this middle book of the trilogy through the end of February. We’re already 40% of the way to our goal, but we’d love your help in getting closer. Even if you opt not to back, signal boosts are always extremely helpful and very appreciated.

In the center of the graphic is a book cover, showing a person in a football uniform flanked by a roaring bear and a roaring dragon. It lists the book title and author and says "Twinned: Book 1." Arrows point at text describing features of the book: shapeshifters and magic users; freshmen in college; m/m relationships; aromantic, gay main character; sports, martial arts, and anger management." Bottom text says "Available Now!"

Blurb:

Don’t hesitate.
Don’t overthink it.
Commit to the kick.

For eighteen years, Alaric has lived under the cloying politics of family and his Clan community. His freshman year is supposed to be a chance to explore a world where Clan and his shapeshifting Talent isn’t central to his life. But when his inner bear bursts forth during his first football game, endangering those around him, Alaric realizes that it’s not so easy to ignore his past, or his own internalized anger.

In his quest for anger management, Alaric begins to train in taekwondo, and makes new friends in both sports. He finds that he is creating his own small community, where Clan, Mages, other Talents, and even humans come together and build their own found family.

When Alaric receives news that something has happened to his brother Orson, he must return and deal with his Clan and his place in their world. He discovers that old prejudices are still strong between Clan and Mage communities, but that both may be in danger from a creature long thought to be only a legend. Alaric must figure out how to move forward and prevent a war and protect both his home and newly built communities, his found family with him every step of the way.

We expect to crowdfund the third book later this year, as we’re in the process of editing it right now. Want to make sure you don’t miss the campaign? You can follow the pre-launch page on Kickstarter now!

Duck Prints Press is excited to open pre-orders on our next novel! Missed Fortunes by Tris Lawrence is the middle book of the Twinned trilogy, a very queer series of books set at the fictional Pine Hills University in upstate New York, focused on the lives of a group of college students trying to navigate all the usual challenges of university while also juggling their individual magical Talents and, oh, maybe sort of kinda the risk of the world ending. Book 1, Commit to the Kick, has been available for sometime, and we are working on editing book 3 for a summer Kickstarter launch with merch and more. Now is the perfect time to grab book 1 if you don’t already have it, pre-order book 2, and get both books read before book 3 goes to print!

The only way to pre-order this book is via the Duck Prints Press webstore!

For this campaign, we are offering both Commit to the Kick and Missed Fortunes in e-book and/or trade paperback formats, and we’re also offering a set of short stories including our published Welcome to Pine Hills University short stories. Make sure to check out the discounted campaign bundles to save money on your books, and note that backers will get a campaign-exclusive bookplate signed by Tris Lawrence!

The only merchandise we’re offering this campaign is our Patreon-exclusive, a postcard of the Missed Fortunes cover art! All pre-order buyers who also support our Patreon at the $10/month or $25/month level will get the postcard as a freebie. But don’t worry – our future Kickstarter will have more Welcome to PHU merch – you can follow that campaign’s pre-launch page right now to be sure you’re notified when it goes live.

We encourage you to check out Commit to the Kick if you haven’t already, and if you have, well, here’s the blurb for book 2…

To solve the problem of now…
Remember what lies behind…
Pass through your hopes and fears…
…to the final outcome.

Carolyn knows the Emergence brought her a new community, but it also revealed the existence of people with magical Talent to the scrutiny of the world. Her high school life ended on a tumultuous note, but now that she’s a junior at Pine Hills University, her life has become stable. She has her twin Kit. She has her sorority sisters. She has her Talent and her Tarot cards.

But when the Tower appears in a reading, the world shatters and changes. Kit has left his predictive Talent behind, and Carolyn’s own predictive Talent is changing decidedly unpredictably. She’s seeing visions of fire and destruction, of Shadows moving in the darkness and intruding into the light. And her sorority sister Drea and Drea’s brother Alaric have returned from winter break, warning of looming dangers and the risk of Clan going to war.

Carolyn shouldn’t get involved—doesn’t want to get involved—but with the world crumbling around her and her predictions hinting at worse to come, she can’t imagine not doing what she can. To make matters worse, the only way forward is to reconcile with her past, but Carolyn isn’t sure how to do that nor why it seems so important to the world that she does.

Duck Prints Press is thrilled to share that next Wednesday, February 12th, we’ll be launching our next crowdfunding campaign – and here is the gorgeous cover of the book, Missed Fortunes by Tris Lawrence. This awesome story, the middle volume of the Twinned trilogy, follows the students of fictional Pine Hills University as they navigate the usual challenges of college: exams, sororities and fraternities, people with new magic Talents emerging, roommate relationships, and of course the looming danger of the end of the world! Tris crowdfunded book one, Commit to the Kick, a few years ago, and it’s now available through the Duck Prints Press webpage. We are in the process of editing book three, and expect to do a Kickstarter campaign for it over the summer. But before then – now, it’s time for the middle book!

Now that we’ve finished our month-long push for our Kickstarter campaign for Aether Beyond the Binary, we have space and time to talk about literally anything else on our social media (lol). We’ve gotten a couple private inquiries about the status of our other projects, so here’s an overview of progress on our current publishing projects (we’ve also got a couple art projects in the works, but that’s a topic for another day).

Aether Beyond the Binary

  • the crowdfunding campaign for our next anthology successfully concluded yesterday!
  • we are putting finishing touches on stories
  • we are preparing templates suitable for printing our merchandise
  • we’ve begun to gather information from backers necessary fulfillment
  • most fulfillment activities are on hold until the funds clear and we can actually place orders; this will take roughly three weeks

Many Drops Make a Stream by Adrian Harley

Other Projects

  • Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica: stories for this collection are being edited, with progress ranging from “barely started” to “almost done.” We’re just beginning to discuss the books internal appearance, and are waiting on the final cover from the artist we’re working with. We expect to release the contributor list in the next few weeks and hope to crowdfund the anthology during the spring.
  • Untitled Best Of Anthologies: we’ll be doing two anthologies – one general imprint and one explicit imprint – featuring stories published to our Patreon and webpage before September 31, 2023. Most of the stories have been set, and we’ll beginning work on the cover and campaign features soon. We expect to launch this during the summer of 2024.
  • A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice: recruitment for this anthology closed on January 15th, and we will be selecting contributors and notifying them by January 31st. We expect this campaign to be ready for launch in roughly a year (late 2024 or early 2025).
  • Untitled General Imprint Anthology: we’re in the very preliminary stages of discussing a theme for our next general imprint anthology, and we expect to open recruitment for it in the late spring, with an expected publication date of summer, 2025.
  • Scrap Metal Angel by Nicola Kapron: our next novella project, we are working on final editing, and once that’s done we’ll begin work on a cover, artwork, and other campaign aspects. We don’t yet have a time frame on pre-orders, but definitely during 2024, before the fall.
  • The Twinned Trilogy by Tris Lawrence: we still have a great deal of editing to complete on this project, but covers are done and the pre-launch page is on Kickstarter. We’re aiming for spring or summer 2024 for crowdfunding.
  • We have several other novellas and novels in the pipeline, but none that we’re ready to announce yet. Be on the look-out!

Want to always know the latest on what we’re working on? Want a say in what we work on next? Want behind-the-scenes access, more information, awesome extras, free stories, and more? Want exclusive extra merch for supporting our future campaigns? Best yet: want the joy of supporting queer independent publishing? If you said “yes” to any of these, there’s no time like today to become a backer of our Patreon!

We’ve got three new short stories out September 28th 2023!

Title: A Ghost for Halloween
Author: K. B. Vimes

General/No Relationship, Family and Siblings, Ghosts, Mourning and Grief, Child Point of View

In the spirit of Color by Owl Outerbridge, The Offered Ones by A. L. Heard, and The Fairy Garden by Rhosyn Goodfellow, K. B. Vimes continues our authors’ tradition of writing compelling stories that explore the fears and hopes attendant with raising children in the modern world.

Halloween is Maggie’s favorite day of the year; she just wishes she knew why her parents hate it so much, why they always refuse to go trick-or-treating with her, why her mother spends the night drunk. At least this year, she’s found another kid to go with her. He’s strange, but Maggie will overlook a lot if it means she gets to have a friend.

Title: Be Not Afraid
Author: Nicola Kapron

M/M, Angels and Demons and the Apocalypse Oh My!, the Hardest Part of the Post-Apocalypse is Finding a Job, There’s Only One Bed (but the Roommate Doesn’t Sleep)

Nicola Kapron returns with her seventh story published with Duck Prints Press, this time exploring how “the end of the world” can mean very different things depending on one’s circumstances.

Tora survives the end of the world, and so does his sister, even though he can’t escape the niggling feeling that one or both of them shouldn’t have. Still, that’s not his immediately problem. No, he’s more concerned about his demon roommate and his odd-job daily gig.

Title: Commute
Author: Eliot Lovell

F/F, the Inherent Awkwardness of Sitting Together on the Train, WLW Disaster Flirting

Fluffy f/f is one of our most popular short story genres. Eliot Lovell’s debut story with Duck Prints Press joins our extensive catalog of works by such authors as A. L. Heard, Violet J. Hayes, Annabeth Lynch, and D. V. Morse. You can check out all of our f/f general imprint titles here.

Eloise intensely dislikes when she has to work in the city, not least because of the commute by train. But the longer the beautiful woman sits across from her in the facing row of seats, the more she starts to think maybe commuting isn’t so bad…

Also Now Available: The Summer 2023 General Imprint Bundle!

Series: Pet Names: A Fantasy M x M x M Smut Collection
Author: boneturtle

M/M/M, Fantasy, Porn with Plot

A Safe Place to Land and Want You Both introduced us to the god Aren and his husbands, the demons Mithros and Samael, and showed us just how steamy things get when the three are together.

In this prequel story, learn how they met, and got together! The god Aren has been sent by the heavenly court to infiltrate the army of the demon king Samael. He’s expecting the mission to be difficult; what he’s not expecting is the sparks the fly every time he’s sparring with Samael or helping Samael’s husband Mithros with his work…

Title: Warm Anything You Want
Author: Tris Lawrence

M/M/NB, Modern, Established Threesome, Temperature Play

On a snowy winter day, Crys is making breakfast and Jake is outside shoveling snow when their third, Win, comes downstairs, and he clearly only has one thing on his mind.

Theoretically, they all need to get to work, but Win is so deliciously hot, and Jake is so deliciously cold, and, well…maybe, if Crys is very lucky, there’ll be a snow delay, and the three of them will have some time to explore this new (temperature) dynamic between them…

To escape the insistence of his friends and family that he become a “proper young lady,” he seeks refuge on the island in the bay where the seals sun themselves during the summer.

This year, Dice uses this opportunity to finally, after years of passing, tell the company he’s trans.

That’s not the problem.

The problem is that Grey, Dice’s favorite company-owned Horizon super soldier, has asked for Dice’s help completing his Form 301-A.

-

Title: Live Like There’s No Tomorrow (a short prequel story in the Welcome to PHU ‘verse)
Author: Tris Lawrence

Family Feels, Surviving Cancer, Finding Hope Through Everyday Struggles

Middle-school student Jackson is not particularly upset about his cancer; the doctor’s assure him he’ll recover, and his biggest concern is that his friends will be a grade or more above him by the time he’s able to get back to school.

Well, that and that he’s sure that his mother is keeping a secret from him, but he can’t figure out what that secret is and she’s not talking about it.

-

Title: Moongatherer

As is their way, Clan Firefox has once again chosen two representatives to travel to Moon’s Rest and make an offering to the Goddess to bring the moonlight back.

No one is surprised that Pomegranate will be making the journey.

But everyone is shocked when Honeycomb is selected, and no one more so than Honeycomb herself.

And, as they set out on their journey, all Honeycomb can see is the memory of harsh solar rays and burning fires…

Maybe during this journey, these two young women can find more than they ever thought to seek…

The US is celebrating Memorial Day this weekend, and all around the northern hemisphere, we’re enjoying the warming weather and the end of a lovely May!

And what better way to enjoy the end of the month than getting your book on?

For only the second time ever, people involved with Duck Prints Press – the independent press founded by fandom folks to publish the original work of fancreators, with an emphasis on works featuring LGBTQIA+ characters – will be attending cons and book events to (officially and unofficially) share more information about the Press!

Interested in learning more by meeting folks involved with the Press? Well, if you’re going to either of these events this weekend, you can!

The Hay Festival, Hay-on-Wye, Wales, UK

Rachael L. Young, Press staff editor, will be attending The Hay Festival today, tomorrow, and Sunday! We have no official presence at the Festival, but you’ll know Rachael by her awesome Press swag, including several of our books, our pins, our bookmarks, and this amazing Dux tote bag she got custom printed! If you see her, stop by and say hi – and don’t forget to grab one of our business cards before you leave!

Balticon, Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Author Tris Lawrence is attending Balticon tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday, where she’ll be promoting her own work and her work with the Press, including participating in multiple panels and doing a reading from her novel Commit to the Kick. She’s also got several of our anthologies for you to take a look at, a pile of business cards, the last unsold print copies of the first print run of Commit to the Kick (we’ve got a reprint in the works, though…) and the debut of our first-ever entirely free Duck Prints Press zine, assembled by author and editor Alec J. Marsh!

Want to meet Tris? Here’s her panel schedule:

  • Sunday 11:30am – Spear Carriers and Background Characters
  • Sunday 2:30pm – Works I Wasn’t Ready to Write
  • Sunday 4:00pm – How to succeed as an ND (NeuroDiverse) creative
  • Sunday 5:30pm – Reading (with Elektra Hammond)
  • Monday 11:30am – Small press or self-publish?

If you’re going to either of these events, we really hope to meet you there!

Not able to attend either of these events? You’ll have other chances! We’re still fleshing out our 2023 convention schedule, but we know for sure we’ll have people – and tables! – at these events:

NordCon, Hamburg, Germany – June 2nd – 4th: Alessa Riel and possibly other German Press folks will be attending NordCon! We’ll have a table there, along with cards, stickers, and some other fun freebies.

FlameCon, New York City, New York, USA – August 12th – 13th: we might be attending FlameCon! We are on the waitlist for a small table, and if we’re able to get a table, we’ll be there with bells on (possibly literally). If not, we’ll skip this year, but we’re definitely going to try to make it next year!

FandomFest, Schenectady, New York, USA – August 26th – 27th: I (Nina Waters/unforth), Tris Lawrence, Catherine E. Green, Shea Sullivan, Willa Blythe, Nova Mason, and possibly other Press authors and contributors will be attending this convention, local to where the Press is based! We’ll have a vending table with merch and books for sale, and we’ll also be hosting a panel about transitioning from writing fanfiction to original fiction. We’ll post more about that, including scheduling, once the con organizers formally announce the schedule.

Albacon, Albany, New York, USA – September 8th – 10th: Tris Lawrence and I will be at Albacon in Albany, and we’ll be vending too! We don’t yet know about panels and readings, but we’re definitely looking to get involved. When the event is closer, we’ll absolutely be sharing more information.

We’re looking to expand our con attendance in the future, so be on the look out! And if you know a local con you think would suit us, do let us know!

What about y’all – attending any fun cons or book-related events this summer?

“I have a spare too,” Sandy replies. “Sometimes I get dirty lying down on the gym floor to launch the plane. I’d figured I’d save it for tomorrow, but now is good. I feel gross; it’s been a long day.”

Eve is disappointed; she wanted to share hers with Sandy. Maybe she wants to save the day, or maybe she just wants to see her best friend wearing her clothes.

Happy December everyone! New month brings us a new theme! We’ve got at least three stories coming out in December based on the theme “The Holidays.” We encouraged authors to take a loose definition of what counts as “the holidays,” so expect a range from “literally actually about a December holiday” through “holidays of the author’s own invention” through “a holiday is mentioned but not prominent in the story.”

For our first “holiday” story, we’ve got a time stamp/after-story for Tris Lawrence’s novel Commit to the Kick, about Alaric and Chris and the events that occur during winter break between Christmas and New Years! Note that while this story is technically stand-alone, it’ll make a lot more sense if you’ve read Commit to the Kick!
