Now that we’ve finished our month-long push for our Kickstarter campaign for Aether Beyond the Binary, we have space and time to talk about literally anything else on our social media (lol). We’ve gotten a couple private inquiries about the status of our other projects, so here’s an overview of progress on our current publishing projects (we’ve also got a couple art projects in the works, but that’s a topic for another day).

To Drive the Hundred Miles by Alec J. Marsh

Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s The Three Musketeers

Hockey Bois by A. L. Heard

  • all merchandise has been received and prepared for distribution
  • trade paperback books have been received
  • the proof of the hardcover edition has been approved, and the hardcover edition is in production
  • according to our book printer, BookLogix, we should expect delivery of the hardcover edition in roughly a month (around the end of February)
  • once we’ve received all items necessary for fulfillment, we will send out everyone’s orders as quickly as possible

Aether Beyond the Binary

  • the crowdfunding campaign for our next anthology successfully concluded yesterday!
  • we are putting finishing touches on stories
  • we are preparing templates suitable for printing our merchandise
  • we’ve begun to gather information from backers necessary fulfillment
  • most fulfillment activities are on hold until the funds clear and we can actually place orders; this will take roughly three weeks

Many Drops Make a Stream by Adrian Harley

Other Projects

  • Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica: stories for this collection are being edited, with progress ranging from “barely started” to “almost done.” We’re just beginning to discuss the books internal appearance, and are waiting on the final cover from the artist we’re working with. We expect to release the contributor list in the next few weeks and hope to crowdfund the anthology during the spring.
  • Untitled Best Of Anthologies: we’ll be doing two anthologies – one general imprint and one explicit imprint – featuring stories published to our Patreon and webpage before September 31, 2023. Most of the stories have been set, and we’ll beginning work on the cover and campaign features soon. We expect to launch this during the summer of 2024.
  • A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice: recruitment for this anthology closed on January 15th, and we will be selecting contributors and notifying them by January 31st. We expect this campaign to be ready for launch in roughly a year (late 2024 or early 2025).
  • Untitled General Imprint Anthology: we’re in the very preliminary stages of discussing a theme for our next general imprint anthology, and we expect to open recruitment for it in the late spring, with an expected publication date of summer, 2025.
  • Scrap Metal Angel by Nicola Kapron: our next novella project, we are working on final editing, and once that’s done we’ll begin work on a cover, artwork, and other campaign aspects. We don’t yet have a time frame on pre-orders, but definitely during 2024, before the fall.
  • The Twinned Trilogy by Tris Lawrence: we still have a great deal of editing to complete on this project, but covers are done and the pre-launch page is on Kickstarter. We’re aiming for spring or summer 2024 for crowdfunding.
  • We have several other novellas and novels in the pipeline, but none that we’re ready to announce yet. Be on the look-out!

Want to always know the latest on what we’re working on? Want a say in what we work on next? Want behind-the-scenes access, more information, awesome extras, free stories, and more? Want exclusive extra merch for supporting our future campaigns? Best yet: want the joy of supporting queer independent publishing? If you said “yes” to any of these, there’s no time like today to become a backer of our Patreon!

We’ve got three crowdfunding campaigns currently in the midst of fulfillment, and we wanted to take a moment to post about our progress on each of them!

Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s The Three Musketeers

Our most recent campaign on Kickstarter, to fund Aim For The Heart, ended on July 15th, 2023. After some print challenges revealed in the proof copy of the book, we had to make some fairly extensive tweaks to the manuscript, and getting that completely set has taken a fair amount of time. But we’re there now – the book is done and printed, and we’re just doing some final preparation on the e-book and backer data in anticipation of packing and shipping everyone’s orders this weekend, November 18th and 19th!

Many Drops Make a Stream by Adrian Harley

We were 100% on track to fulfill Many Drops Make a Stream orders within the next week or so…and then the enamel pins arrived, after 6 or so weeks in production, with an error that makes them undistributable (the poor tiger part of Droplet has no stripes on her back and hind legs!). Everything else for this campaign is ready to go, and the pin manufacturer has been very receptive to our issue and is rushing replacements for us, but we’re still at least a few weeks from having them even if they’re expedited – manufacturing enamel-ware takes time, and they have to ship from China.

That said, because we have everything else, we will be doing some distribution shortly: namely, for people who also backed Aim For The Heart, if we can save them shipping money by combining their orders, we will do so and refund the difference in shipping cost – combining the book shipping for these individuals, and then forwarding them their pins separately, will be a big savings for them.

For everyone else, we will prepare everything we can, and as soon as we have the pins we will distribute everything. If it looks like we will not have the pins before the December holidays start, we will send out everything BUT the pins, and send out pin orders alone subsequently. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make sure that y’all get items of the quality and accuracy that you deserve!

To Drive the Hundred Miles by Alec J. Marsh

All of the merchandise for To Drive the Hundred Miles has arrived, and it looks great. We’re almost done repackaging it and preparing it for distribution. The proof of the book arrived last week, and we’ve reviewed it and made a few necessary tweaks; we re-submitted those files to the printer yesterday, and are awaiting their confirmation so we can sign off on production of the full print run. Once it’s in the print queue, our best guess is that it’ll be roughly two weeks before it arrives at our door. At that time, we’ll be able to get everyone’s pre-orders turned around pretty quickly.

Thank you everyone for your orders with us! We’re excited to bring all three of these large projects to a close, and get amazing books into all of your hands!

And keep your eyes open, because there’s more to come – the re-release of A. L. Heard’s Hockey Bois, revised and reprinted, will open for pre-orders on December 1st, and our next Kickstarter campaign for the anthology Aether Beyond the Binary will be launching on December 26th. We also expect to run a Kickstarter campaign in February for Tris Lawrence’s Twinned trilogy, and we’ve got more in the pipeline after that! So make sure you follow us on social media, subscribe to our newsletters, back us on Patreon for sneak peeks and backer-exclusive extras, and leave us reviews on Goodreads or Storygraph!

Want one or more of these books, and/or the merchandise that goes with them, but missed out on the campaigns? Don’t despair – the books and leftover merch will become available during this coming winter! So be on the look out!

We on the cusp of the FINAL 24 HOURS of the crowdfunding campaign to publish our next anthology, Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers”! Our project is funded, we’re inching toward our first stretch goal, and we’re delighted to introduce you to the last of our creators, Jupiter V.

Jupiter is doing two interior pieces for the book, and is the creator of the 12-page comic! This teaser is for one of their sketches, not for their final piece. 😀

Where Hearts Cross by Jupiter V

About the Artist: Hailing from Kjipuktuk/Halifax, Nova Scotia (that’s in Canada), Jupiter V is an artist, musician, and creative crackerjack with a career spanning over a decade. Cutting their teeth designing award-winning gig posters, they’ve gone on to illustrate for film, graphic fiction, children’s literature, and more. At times, they have been caught painting murals at the circus (?!) and whooping their child mercilessly in Rivals of Aether.

Jupiter is currently toiling away at their next graphic work of fiction, Wizards 99k, as we speak.

Today is your last chance to back this awesome campaign, support independent publishing and queer creators, and get this amazing book and the accompanying exclusive merch! Don’t miss out – pledge to our Kickstarter NOW!

We’re entering the final 48 hours of our crowdfunding campaign for Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers”! We’ve introduced 19 of our 20 authors. Meet the last (but most definitely not least) – MouMouSanRen!

Untitled by MouMouSanRen

About the Author: MouMouSanRen (she/her) was born and raised on unceded Matinecock territory in what is now known as Flushing, New York. She has been published in multiple non-fiction magazines including Polygon. Aim for the Heart is her fiction debut. She resides in her native Queens, practicing martial arts and taking care of her dogs.

Story Teaser:

“Her parents must have gone to Montana,” they whispered, some admiringly, some with fascinated pity. When New Yorkers fled the Eruption, it was to find something more than what the city could provide for them. Some had retreated to well-fed, well-off places like East Asia or Europe, or warm, spiritual places, like New Mexico. They were sometimes drier, sometimes colder, than New York, but they were good lots to end up with after fleeing the city. Only the poorest went someplace like Montana.

Duck Prints Press (the indie Press founded by fandom folks to publish the original work of fandom folks) is nearing the end of our current crowdfunding campaign to publish our next anthology, Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers”! Four days left til the Kickstarter ends, three creators left to spotlight, and a little over $3k to go to hit our first stretch goal!

Here, check out another story teaser, this one by Sebastian Marie! The tag line on this one, per Sebastian, is: THE MUSKETEERS IF THEY WERE HOT BUTCHES FROM FLORIDA. If that isn’t an elevator pitch to get your attention, I don’t know what is…

Pensacola’s Most Wanted by Sebastian Marie

About the Author: Sebastian Marie (he/him) is an engineering student with a penchant for writing off-the-wall fantasy, darkly comedic prose, and sickeningly indulgent short stories. He has a lot of opinions about dragons, pirates, and sword fighting. Track him down on Ao3 and he’ll share these opinions through fanfiction for various fandoms including BBC Merlin, The Mechanisms, and Our Flag Means Death. His original works often combine fantasy and dystopia into what he calls “queer fantasy hopepunk,” something that will be explored in his future novels. He loves to write conflicting traditional and non-traditional family dynamics, especially where they intersect with queer relationships. And if he can throw werewolves and brujas into the mix? So much the better. When not writing, frantically studying dirt, or reading, he can be found singing loudly, sewing impractical coats, playing Dungeons and Dragons, and going on long rambling walks while plotting stories (and occasionally falling into rivers).

This is his second time writing for Duck Prints Press, having previously contributed to She Wears the Midnight Crown. This brings his grand total of published works up to two! He’s looking forward to more, as soon as he gets some sleep.

Story Teaser:

“So,” Connie drawls, wrapping herself around Darcy, her wife of two days, as they enter their private dormitory. “You gonna explain to me exactly how you managed to get all those recommendation letters?”

Darcy is still riding the highs of A: marriage, B: watching an excellent con come to fruition, and C: as a direct result of that con, successfully enrolling in the New Pensacola branch of the Florida Academy for Fighting Arts (FAFA for the initiated) after a full year of waiting. She just smiles and wraps a hand around her wife’s waist. “Are you insinuating, Mrs. Batz, that there was foul play involved?”

“I know there was some funny business, Mrs. Batz, what with who your aunt and uncles are. I think I deserve the story.”

“Hey, I didn’t know they were infamous when they adopted me.”

“Story, now.”

“Okay, okay.”

We’ve got this whole story, and 19 other fabulously queer tales, AND a whole delightful pile of queerified musketeer art, in this anthology – don’t miss it! Visit our campaign page now!

Story Teaser

Athos cups Aramis’s jaw as he wipes the blood away with a wet cloth. He moves gently across his cheekbone, his hairline. His touch is as gentle as if it could cause agony, even though Aramis is deep in his slumber and he can’t grunt or flinch or feel a thing. It’s good, Athos tells himself. He’s not in any pain for a while.

Selfishly, though, he’d rather have his groans and screams than this uncertain silence.

He carefully wipes the blood from Aramis’s eyelid, so that when he wakes up, he can open both his eyes and focus them properly: on Athos, on his surroundings. On the world that is too close to slipping away from him. Athos makes sure there are no cuts around his eye, but luckily all of the blood came from the gash on his forehead. Aramis will be inconsolable about the scar, as if that small mark could make him any less beautiful.

There’s only a few days left in the campaign to crowdfund Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers” – gosh, I can’t believe it’s almost over already. Here’s our last two-fer creator spotlight! 😀

The Serendipity of a Late Train by Catherine E. Green

About the Author: Catherine E. Green (pronouns: xe/xem/xyr or they/them/their) is an agender person, one who’s had an on-again, off-again love affair with writing. Xe began writing when xe was a wee thing, when xyr other major pastimes were playing xyr mother’s NES and roughhousing with the boys next door. It’s only in the past few years that they have begun writing consistently and publishing their writing, fanfiction and original writing alike, leading to their first published short story titled “Of Loops and Weaves.”

Outside of writing, xe is a collector of books and sleep debt and an avid admirer of the cosmos. Playing video games, reading a variety of fiction genres (primarily fantasy, queer romance, and manga and graphic novels of all kinds), and working on wrangling their own personal data archiving projects occupy most of their free time. Xe has also started meeting up with a local fiber arts group and is excited to be crocheting xyr first scarf.

Story Teaser:

Oh, no. This is not happening.

Athos picks up the threads of Porthos’ insults. “One has to wonder if this is the same girl who gave me lip for interrupting her, frankly, dangerous stunts? Weaving sloppily through bunches of brand-new skaters, nearly bowling into several of them, and then acting like it was no big deal?”

“Excuse me?” Lottie replies, sharp and in disbelief.

Aramis starts in, “Or the girl who arrives late to tryouts—”

“It’s not my fault the train out of Gascony was late!”

“—and then proceeds to make a huge commotion thereafter. No doubt, a calm, polite conversation with our NSOs would have sufficed,” Aramis finishes, nonplussed.

“Don’t forget: this is the girl who insulted my plumage!” Porthos cries, gripping said rainbow-colored plumage to her chest.

Lottie raises an eyebrow. “Excuse me for mentioning it was a tripping hazard.”

“Like you’re one one to talk, girlie!”

There is ONLY ONE WEEK LEFT in the crowdfunding campaign for Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers”! And we’re funded! Are you excited? We’re excited. We really hope you’ll keep sharing this around, as our base goal was only the beginning, and we’d love to get this awesome book into the hands of a whole mess more people. 😀

The campaign ends Saturday, July 15th at 10:15 AM Eastern Timeback now to be sure you don’t miss out on this debut opportunity to get this wonderful anthology!

Love and Graffiti by Shea Sullivan

About the Author: Shea Sullivan is a life-long writer living in upstate New York. As a late-blooming queer person, she enjoys writing about complex characters coming into themselves and finding comfort in being exactly who they are.

Shea’s day jobs in computer programming and middle management have molded her into the patient, sarcastic, big-hearted, frustrated human she is today, but it’s what she does outside the 9-5 that really excites her. When she’s not writing, she can be found painting, napping, making quilts, watching documentaries, and trying not to adopt more animals, usually with a cup of tea in hand.

Story Teaser

“When you think of me, what do you…?” I hardly know what I’m asking. I feel young, suddenly, more uncertain than I have in a long time. “Do you think I’m…?” Disconnected? Corporate? Boring?

Alix turns their head and I can just see them in the soft light through the window. They blink slowly, then smile. “Is it a two-for-one crisis Friday? She really got under your skin, huh?”

“Shut up,” I grumble, poking them in the side. “There’s just. I used to do more, when we were younger. I used to be more fun.”

WE’RE FUNDED!

As of about 20 minutes ago, the campaign to crowdfund Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers” has hit it’s funding goal, which means we are GO for publication and merch production and the whole ten yards. We’ll keep posting these updates and see if we can’t hit our first stretch goal – at $12,000, we’ll be able to give our contributors a raise, and all backers will receive the cover as a print-suitable image file!

We are so so excited that we’ll be able to bring this collection to print life, and we couldn’t have done it without y’all. Thank you backers, and thank you signal boosters!

The campaign has another week left, so it’s not too late to check it out and help us reach our stretch goal! Come on over and check it out!

The Inseparables by D. A. Hernández

About the Author: AKA Mitch, an author who works as a teacher, reads fanfiction compulsively, tells anyone who will listen about their weird dreams, takes long naps, and once in a while manages to write a story or two. You can find another of their stories in the Duck Prints Press anthology She Wears the Midnight Crown.

Mitch’s playlist includes metal, pop, electronic, bluegrass, reggaeton, and cumbia.

Story Teaser:

Suddenly he heard his own voice singing a familiar melody.

Anoche me besaste en la playa
la luz de luna iluminaba tu cara

The opening phrases of “Solo Dos Bros.” Alone in his bedroom, in the dark of night, he let himself listen to it like it was someone else’s song. A young man’s voice mixing with Athos’s deep timbre, slow, sexy, and nostalgic. It really was a very good song.

He couldn’t help the memory that came: Athos rolling a joint on his sofa, the faint glow of the streetlight illuminating his elegant profile, messy dreads, regal nose, and chiseled jaw. Despite his casual clothes, he had a classic look to him, like a painting in a museum.

As he watched Athos’s clever fingers rolling the joint, D. Art gave words to a melody he’d been rolling around in his head that night. Athos looked up, joint already on his lips, one of his rare, big smiles stretching them, radiating a joy that lit up the dark room.

Stolen Hearts by Aria L. Deair

About the Author: Aria L. Deair is an author who has been writing and (while cursing her excessive comma usage) publishing fanfiction online for more than sixteen years. Freelance writer by day and author every other hour that she isn’t sleeping, she spends her days courting carpal tunnel and “forgetting” to wear her wrist brace.

As a proud member of more fandoms than she can count, Aria can be found blogging about some of the writing that she is avoiding doing at arialerendeair.tumblr.com.

Like a dragon with her hoard, she can be found in her New Hampshire apartment, surrounded by notebooks (most of which are empty), half-filled mugs of tea, and some of the comfiest blankets that have ever existed. Disturb her at your own risk, especially during NaNo Season.

Story Teaser:

“You ready?” Athos asked, pretending to sip the coffee.

D’art sighed and gave him a look. “You hired me for this. You should know that even with all my teasing, I am a professional.”

“So you are,” Athos agreed. “That’s why we’re planning to offer you a position on the team when we’re finished.”

D’art was quiet for a long moment as they stepped into the elevator and hit the button for the 39th floor. He could feel Athos studying him. Assessing his reaction to the offer, maybe. “You have a policy against dating people you work with?”

Athos blinked and sighed. “D’art—”

“Crimson,” Porthos’s voice hissed into the mic.

D’art froze, eyes widening. Over the comms, a crackle and the sound of the earpiece being shattered under a heel came. “Shit.”

We have 9 days to go, and Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers” is 94% funded, and things are lookin’ great…and we still have 11 creators to meet!

Today, we introduce two more: MidnightSilver and Rhosyn Goodfellow. Take a peek at the teasers…

Affaire D’amour by MidnightSilver

About the Artist: I’m MidnightSilver (They/Them). I’m a freelance artist who specialises in fandom art, most often inspired by Supernatural the TV show, and I can usually be found illustrating stories for independent authors—my favourites are those that combine adventure/magic/horror with a boatload of feels! As a bi, non-binary, mixed-race person, I don’t believe in restrictive boundaries, and I love tales that highlight diversity and freedom of expression while at the same time incorporating the fantastical and magical elements that I fell in love with when reading stories as a child. It’s my aim to take all the many wondrous worlds and people with whom we visit when lost in book pages at 2 o’clock in the morning and to share them with you in visual form. It’s a project I never tire of pursuing.

Pierced Hearts by Rhosyn Goodfellow

About the Author: Rhosyn Goodfellow is an author of queer romance and speculative fiction living with her spouse and two dogs in the Pacific Northwest, where she is sad to report that she has not yet mysteriously disappeared or encountered any cryptids. Her hobbies include spoiling the aforementioned dogs, drinking inadvisable amounts of coffee, and running unreasonably long distances very slowly. She’s secretly just a collection of loosely-related stories dressed up in a meat suit.

Story Teaser:

“The plan is simple,” Porthos tells d’Artagnan the next day. “We spar. You lose. Badly.”

“I don’t see how letting you win a few sparring matches will help.”

Porthos smirks. “Who said anything about letting me win? But you’re missing the truly brilliant part of the plan,” he continues. “If you’re injured, you can ask Athos to help patch you up.”

“Athos has patched me up more times than I care to count,” d’Artagnan points out. “How will this time be any different?”

“This time, you’ll be paying attention. You want to know if Athos returns your affections, and the fastest way to ascertain someone’s true affections is to ask for help tending your injuries. It works especially well with leg injuries,” he adds with a waggle of his eyebrows, “because you can ask them for help taking your breeches off.”

D’Artagnan frowns. “But I don’t have a—” He breaks off with a curse as Porthos drives a knee into his thigh, just below the hip. “Ow! Was that necessary?”

“Quit whining. It’s only a bruise. You’ll need several more if you want this to be convincing.”

Today, as we inch toward the finish line on our crowdfunding campaign for Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers,” we have a modern setting alternate universe retelling from Lucy K. R.!

The Three Mic O’ Tears by Lucy K. R.

About the Author: Lucy K.R. (she/her) is technically in existence. Every time she is free, she writes. Sometimes when she is not free she also writes. This has occasionally created problems. She is fortunate to be supported (read: enabled) by her enthusiastic fiancée Tomo, a loving OG family, and a lively found family as well.

Eager for a change after a decade of waitressing, Lucy K.R. took the chance in March of 2021 to make her first steps into the world of published work. Prior to the success of the largely-fabricated German translation of the short-story found in this collection, ‘die Karaoke-Königinnen’, she was best known for her work on Mageling: Rise of the Ancient Ones and in the Duck Prints Press anthologies “And Seek (Not) to Alter Me” and “She Wears the Midnight Crown”.

In her stories, Lucy K. enjoys writing evil ideas as gently as possible, portrayed through unexpected lenses. She would like to acknowledge that she has never written a biographical statement that did not turn out weird, beg your indulgence, and express her hope that you enjoy her work in this anthology. The people at Duck Prints Press have been a delight, and she is deeply grateful to be included!

Story Teaser:

“The plan is to pay you back for the slight, not to ruin your life,” Ash agrees with such dead certainty that Dart feels a thrill of terror and excitement all jumbled up, merged into the same creature.

“You seem very sure you’ll win,” Dart offers, tilting her own head in return.

“Ooh,” Portia’s lips quirk into an even cheekier smile.

“Cute,” Artemis comments, appraising eyes still fixed on Dart.

“So, in order of offense?” Dart asks, feeling her inner performer awaken at their attention. “Ash first, then Portia, then Artemis?”

“You seem very sure you’ll make it to the last dance yourself,” Ash returns, even as Artemis strips off her jacket and neatly folds it, nodding her approval.

“I came here to sing karaoke,” Dart takes the opportunity to roll up her sleeves. “Nothing and no one is going to keep me off that stage.”

She’s never fought anyone before. She’s never had to. But she said it, and she meant it—nothing will keep her off that stage. She lifts her fists, only to be tutted at by Ash.

“Wrists straight, dear,” she says, lifting her one good arm in demonstration.

“Ah,” says Dart, and fixes her posture.

We’ve posted this and 18 other teasers at our campaign page, and shared a lot more info to boot, so if you’re looking for a fabulous anthology this summer, make sure you check it out!

We are 2/3rds of the way through our crowdfunding campaign for Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers” – only 10 days left (we end at 10 AM on July 15th!), and we’re still $600 away from our goal! This is a great opportunity to support a small, queer-owned business with its roots in fandom, as we write and art and publish completely legal fanworks! HOW COOL IS THAT?

If you want to learn more about Duck Prints Press, our owner @unforth, our staff, and our contributors, you should visit our webpage.

If you want to learn more about this book and the people involved in it, you should visit our Kickstarter campaign page.

And, if you want to learn about today’s two awesome, spotlighted contributors, Nova Mason and Amalia Zeichnerin, you should read on…

Three of Hearts by Amalia Zeichnerin

About the Artist: Amalia Zeichnerin (she/her) lives in Hamburg, Germany. She is a disabled queer woman with a chronic illness and lives in a polyam polycule. Amalia mostly writes original fiction (SFF, cosy Victorian mysteries, Queer Romance) in German and has also one English Star Wars fan fiction on AO3, with one of her favorite shippings, StormPilot. Amalia also likes to draw and paint, especially fantasy world maps, character portraits, and sometimes also fanart. Amalia’s hobbies include pen-and-paper RPG and LARPing; these also have inspired some of her writing and artworks.

Paris-ish by Nova Mason

About the Author: Nova Mason spent a significant portion of her childhood fantasizing about dragons, spaceships, and other worlds. She is now, allegedly, a grown-up, with two kids, and more varied interests. Dragons, spaceships, and other worlds are still pretty high in the list, though.

Story Teaser:

D’Artagnan stared at the agenda in his hands and shifted against the uncomfortable metal folding chair. Somehow, it didn’t matter when they showed up to the HOA meetings; he and his friends always missed out on the good chairs.

The treasurer, Richelieu, was at that moment scowling and preaching about the evils of outdoor pests. He implored the members of the Paris Neighborhood Homeowner’s Association to ensure that they kept their trash under lock and key until at least 8 p.m. the night before trash pickup, as per the bylaws. D’Artagnan had to stifle a chuckle every time Richelieu said the word “Paris,” halfway between the English pronunciation and a strange faux-French accent. There was nothing Parisian about the neighborhood other than its name and that the ladies’ garden club wore berets and scarves to the annual summer cookout.

Another day, another two creators from Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers” for y’all to meet!

untitled by C

About the Artist: A massive drinker of coffee and a lover of old TV shows and movies, C is a small-time concept artist and illustrator who likes to dabble in all things literature and history. When she’s not busy drawing and nodding along to Bruce Springsteen while researching the Kentucky Cave Wars, she’s trying to save up for grad school to become to a forensic artist so she can draw some more.

Fast Times at Treville High by Aeryn Jemariel Knox

About the Artist: Aeryn Jemariel Knox first identified as a writer in second grade. With both parents involved in theater and a house full of bookshelves, they grew up surrounded by stories, and as soon as they could hold a crayon, they felt the urge to tell their own. In 2001, they discovered the wide and wonderful world of fanfiction; since then, they have gone by Jemariel in fandom spaces across the internet, engaging with their favorite media and communities in the best way they know. Previous fandoms include Harry Potter, Star Trek (The Original Series), Torchwood, and BBC’s Sherlock, but their most prolific writing and strongest community ties are in the Supernatural fandom. Now, nearly a decade after their last original fiction attempt, Aeryn is eager to explore the wider writing word.

A native of Portland, Oregon, Aeryn currently lives in the suburbs with their husband and 16-year-old cat. For a day job, they work as a tech writer and general paper-pusher for an energy drink factory. Their favorite stories, both to tell and to read, are stories about love, identity, and magic.

Story Teaser:

As the last bell rings, Dorian stands in an empty bathroom peering into the spotty mirror, fists against the cold ceramic edge of the sink. Three separate people want to decorate his face, all at the same time. He’s a scrappy asshole, but he’ll be lucky if he can get out of this as more than bloody pulp.

Whatever. He’s gotten this far on a devil-may-care attitude. Maybe if he can take the punk chick—Portia—the other two will fold. Athena hadn’t looked like the fighting type, and Leg-boy… that’s another story.

The others have already gathered by the time he finds the bleachers, the three of them in a loose clump under a banner proclaiming “Go Muskets!” strung across the back of the sagging wooden structure. The football team is practicing at the far end of the field, but the bleachers themselves are empty.

Portia catches sight of him first. “Look who didn’t chicken out,” she shouts, deliberately loud enough for his ears.

As one, the others turn to Dorian, who feels his legs turn to jelly and his stomach to ice. He should have expected this.

“You all… know each other?” he asks in a tremulous voice.

“Yeah. We freaks gotta stick together.”

Our Kickstarter is SO CLOSE to being funded – so come on over, learn all about it, appreciate this creator and our others, and maybe grab yourself a copy…

The campaign to fund Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers” is now halfway done and going strong! For those not super familiar with how campaigns go, usually the bulk of funding comes in during the first 48 hours and the last 48 hours of the campaign. I personally usually look to see us at 50% funded by the end of the first 48 hours; if we hit that metric then I can say with a fair degree of confidence that we’ll reach our goal. This campaign did hit that, handily, and now with 15 days left, we’re only $750 shy of our goal! While I’m not hosting any parades yet, as I check in midway through our campaign…we’re doing great.

A huge, HUGE thank you to everyone who has backed so far, and also to everyone who has helped spread the word about the campaign. Word of mouth is 10000% the most effective way to help people find out this project exists and get them interested in buying the anthology; we’d never get to the goal without our supporters, and we’d never get there without every person who says, “hey, have you seen this?” Y’all rock. We love that we get to bring you awesome books.

Anyway, on to today’s contributor spotlights!

Knight and Squire by Jennifer Smith

About the Artist: Smith has been drawing since a young age. With a focus in traditional drawing techniques, she has recently started using digital mediums to imitate traditional styles. Her focus is in portraiture and landscapes, especially with watercolor. You can find more of her art on her Tumblr.

Allergy Girl and the Hate Arrangement by R. L. Houck

About the Author: R. L. Houck (she/her) still has one of the first stories she ever wrote, all the way back from elementary school. It was about flightless penguins reaching the sun and was a good indication of her boundless imagination and her love of animals. The latter became a full-time veterinary career; the former keeps her occupied with fanfiction and original fiction in her downtime.

She’s sometimes found wandering the woods around her house in Virginia with her dog. If not there, she’s sitting on the couch, catching up on a Netflix series, and smothered by her five cats. Sometimes, there’s even space for her wife.

Story Teaser:

“Oh, no! Mom’s been very supportive of me being trans. I just meant the name change. For an English lit professor, she has a real hard-on against Shakespeare,” Portia said. “It was one of the main reasons I chose the name.”

Christa didn’t want to bring the conversation down by discussing unsupportive parents of LGBTQA+ kids. Instead, she jumped on the mention of Shakespeare. “Well, Portia was a kick-ass character too,” Christa said.

“Right? Thank you!”

“You’re quite welcome. Oh! Phoenix! Is that why you chose the tattoo? Never mind, you don’t have to answer that. I apologize—I’m being super nosy,” Christa said, immediately backtracking.

Portia laughed. “You’re fine. That is exactly why I chose the phoenix: rebirth. And those pictures are sent; tell me what you think.”

A few seconds later, Christa got a text message from an unknown number. She opened it to see a gorgeous flower arrangement shown in several pictures taken from multiple angles.

“Wow. This is beautiful,” Christa said, voice faint from awe. “Are you sure this says, ‘I hate your guts and wish abstract misery upon you for the rest of your natural existence’ in flower language?”

“…in so many words, yes,” Portia said, sounding amused.

We’ve already raised $7,250 to fund this anthology, and we’re 90% of the way to our goal. Come see what all the fuss is about!

Hope y’all are having a lovely Thursday! I’m sure y’all have a lot going on today. What do we at Duck Prints Press have going on? Why, of course, introducing another contributor to our currently crowdfunding anthology Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers.”

A Toast to Scars by Giulia Malagoli

About the Artist: Giulia Malagoli (she/they) got into art because of generally friendly competition with a classmate in middle school, and now she has an entire Bachelor’s Degree in Concept Art to show for it.

For about ten years, she has been hopping through fandom spaces—from video games, to comics, to movies and TV series—and has drawn inspiration from each of them for both fan and original art. The result is a passion for character design and for art that weaves a story into its visuals, with a whole lot of feelings about the role of The Narrative to boot.

To chase this passion Giulia has moved from their home country of Italy to the United Kingdom and back again. They now work as a freelance illustrator with enthusiasm, always scraping some time at the end of the day to keep up with fandom friends.

Only a teaser for now – you’ll have to get the book to see all of this gorgeous piece in it’s full grayscale A4-size (8 1/4 inches x 11 3/4 inches/21 cm x 30 cm) glory.

Better back the Kickstarter now so you don’t miss out!

(By the way, in case you’ve missed some other things we’ve got going on, we’re selling short story bundles and giving a portion of the proceeds to two queer charities. Read all about it!)

Queen Sponge Studios has contributed two works to Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers,” an anthology of almost 40 fanworks – stories and art! – that Duck Prints Press is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter! Here’s a teaser for one of them…

Untitled by Queen Sponge Studios

About the Artist: Thanks for reading my bio! My name is Sponge, and I use they/them pronouns! I am currently studying for a Game Arts degree through online courses at SNHU. Along with working at a thrift store, I enjoy working on projects with others. Based in Northern Wisconsin, I majorly entertain myself through art and media pertaining to it. On the long list of my hobbies, I enjoy staying active as well as collecting. I am an avid, crazed Sanrio fanatic with a long list of fandoms dating all the way back to when I was ten. I may be more reserved, but I love making new connections through creation! Meeting like-minded individuals working toward a common goal has been the most fulfilling experience I have had to date. As a young artist, I have dabbled in vending at conventions, game art, and selling my own merchandise online. I hope to one day fully chase after my ambitions of artistry full-time through a studio! Thank you for your support and interest in my work!

Another day, another promo for our Kickstarter campaign for Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers”! Today we’re introducing Xianyu Zhou, who wrote this biography before they published three erotica stories with us, lol.

Fated Encounter Challenge by Xianyu Zhou

About the Author: Xianyu Zhou is a translator and aspiring garment and plushie cloning specialist hailing from a coastal city in the tropics. Despite staying a 20-minute drive away from the nearest beach, they have yet to visited one, preferring to dwell in their darkened room luminated by a table lamp and ever-shifting RGB of a CPU fan. They have the tendency to accidentally wander into new and exciting forays such as joining Duck Prints Press (and enjoying it!), learning to sew (stitching and unstitching the same part of a “coaster” for the nth time) and working on their language skills (watching shows to scruntinize take notes about how their subtitles are written).

Xianyu’s contribution to the anthology is their first publication, and they have reportedly made a party hat for their computer to celebrate the occasion.

Story Teaser:

Right. I have a plan, she reminded herself as she tried to wriggle her way out of the flow of bodies.

Dottie’s plan: Attempt and complete the 20th Street Fated Encounter Challenge.

The challenge was deceptively simple: visit three shops in succession and buy something from each of them, then sit in front of the fountain at the end of the street. Supposedly, she would then meet her “fated one.”

Dottie wasn’t actually interested in meeting her “fated one.” She’d never been interested in romance much; she just liked the idea of it, fascinated by its effect on people. What she really wanted was to debunk the urban legend around this challenge.

Tags: alternate universe, anti-soulmates, aromantic, character has a different gender than in the source material, coffeeshop setting, customer service representative, f/f/m/nb, florist setting, games and puzzles, meet awkward, modern, past tense, pov third person limited, pre-relationship

This amazing story is just one of TWENTY in our upcoming anthology – and there’s art, too, and merch extras for backers! Visit our Campaign Page!
