Long time, no giveaway!
As we at Duck Prints Press gear up for our next Kickstarter, featuring the second of our Queer Fanworks Inspired By… anthologies, Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers,” we thought – what better time to offer up some free copies of our first Queer Fanworks Inspired By… anthologies, And Seek (Not) to Alter Me: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.”

This anthology features 16 stories and 20 full-page, color art pieces. We encouraged contributors to stretch their imaginations, think outside the box, and put their own unique—and queer—twist on Benedick, Beatrice, Hero, Claudio, Don Pedro, and the whole gang! In true Shakespearean fashion, our creators play with gender, sexuality, romanticism, and a host of costume changes to tell unique stories—some featuring original characters, some characters from the play—that show Shakespeare’s work in a whole new light.

We’re giving away 21 copies of the book this time around – 20 e-book copies AND one of the last remaining print copies! There are only a couple dozen print copies left, and most have at least a little damage; we’ll also be offering print copies – seconds only, and for a price, not for free! – as an add-on during our crowdfunding campaign for Aim For The Heart, so even if you don’t win the giveaway copy, make sure you follow the Aim For The Heart Kickstarter pre-launch page so you don’t miss your chance to get BOTH books!

We’re making awesome fanart and fanfiction inspired by our favorite public-domain fandoms, and you’re not going to want to miss our hard work.

So head on over to Storygraph for a chance to win this amazing collection, and make sure to keep an eye on our upcoming campaign, too!!

Well, technically there are twenty-five hours left in our Kickstarter, but! TIME IS ALMOST UP!

We’ve reached our first stretch goal, and we’ll be able to commission art for the back cover of the book! Every single e-book will come with the graphic for the front and back cover, every print book will have full-color illustrations on the front and back, and backers at Levels 3, 4, 5, and 6 will get an extra art print featuring the back cover art! Gio Guimarães (Facebook (giovannabcg) | Facebook (giosdoodlesandartworks) | Instagram | Tumblr | Twitter) is the artist. Gio and DPP have already signed a contract, and once we have sketches to share we’ll give y’all an update!

We’d love to reach our next stretch goal, at $16,500, so we can give our authors and artists a raise which doubles how much they earn for their contributions to the anthology. You can help! Check out our merch, help spread the word about the campaign on social media, and – if you want a copy – make sure you buy your own!! This is your only chance to get And Seek (Not) to Alter Me: Queer Fanworks Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” in print, and we’ve got a host of amazing merchandise for our backers too, so don’t miss out!!

duckprintspress: (Default)

Well, well, well, look at this amazing, thrilling e-mail we received last night! As of yesterday, “And Seek (Not) to Alter Me: Queer Fanworks Inspired by William Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing'” has met it’s initial/base funding goal, and will definitely be produced as a print book! We are over the moon; there was much celebration and rejoicing in the Duck Prints Press Discord chat. 😀

But! The campaign isn’t over yet. We have 3 more days – our official end time is Thursday, April 14th at 11:30 a.m. Eastern – and we’d love to hit our first two stretch goals! What are those?

Well, we’re at $12,150 right now.

If we can hit $12,500, we’ll be able to print the books (and include in the e-book!) art for the back cover by front cover artist Gio Guimarães! Backers at Levels 3, 4, 5, and 6 will also receive a second art print (at no additional cost to the backers!). To be honest, we’re pretty certain we’ll hit this goal – so confident, in fact, that we already have commission Gio, contract signed and everything.

More ambitious – if we can hit $16,500, we can give all our authors and artists a raise from 1 cent per word/$50 per page to 2 cents per word/$100 per page – doubling how much we pay them! We’d love to be able to do this, and we think it can be done, but we need your help!

Do you love this project? Do you want to support our authors and artists? If you haven’t backed yet, consider doing so – just $15 will get you the e-book in PDF, ePub, and Mobi format, or you can take advantage of this one-and-only time to get the book in print format, for $40!

If you can’t afford it (we get it! times are tough!) or if you already have backed – help us spread the word! Reblog, retweet, share, and boost our posts on one or more of our social media accounts!

As always, you can find our Kickstarter campaign here – get yours before it’s too late! 3 days left…

Author Spotlight: M. K. Mads

Biography: M. K. Mads has been writing stories since she was seven years old. While she is most prolific in fanfiction and has works scattered among more than a dozen fandoms, she has been making strides into original fiction. Her favorite genre to read is romance. When she isn’t reading, writing, or falling headfirst into a new fandom, she can be found baking, walking, doting on her niblings, or playing Pokemon Go.

Story Title: Dear Don Pedro

Tags: getting together, modern setting, polyamory

Teaser:

“Are you going to join us for dinner anytime soon, or are you going to sit there on your computer all night?”

Pedro glanced over to where Beatrice was hanging over the back of the couch. “I’m working, Bea.”

She pouted, but she didn’t try to touch his computer; Pedro was grateful for small miracles.

“Come on. I know for a fact your deadline isn’t until tomorrow afternoon.” She jerked her head toward the kitchen, where Benedick was mixing up a truly gigantic bowl of spaghetti and marinara. “You can stop working for an hour and have a conversation with your friends.”

“You know she’s not going to let it go until you decide to be sociable,” Benedick said. “She’s never learned to take ‘no’ for an answer.”

Beatrice rolled her eyes and shoved off the couch to saunter over to her husband. “And just why might I do that, hm? Might it have anything to do with certain other people in this room who are too stubborn for their own good?”

Benedick caught her hand and kissed it. “No idea what you’re talking about, Bea, my love.”

She yanked her hand back, but her cheeks flushed and she was suppressing a smile. “You’re incorrigible, and I don’t know why I love you.”

Author Spotlight: Nickel J. Keep

Biography: Nickel (they/them) was born in a galaxy far, far away. No. Wait. That’s not their origin story. They currently live in Pennsylvania with two of their three partners, their two children, and a fat, lazy, chonk of a cat named Sphinx. Story Title: Some Cupids

Tags: friends to lovers, meddling friends, mutual pining, wlw

Teaser:

“It’s not that easy, Claudia.” Hero frowned. “There are people who would harm them just because they love one another.” He nodded towards Bea’s balcony. “She would rather suffer and love Beni from afar than do anything to put her at risk. And, I venture to say, Beni’s the same way about Bea.”

Claudia shook her head. “What a pair of cockeyed broads.” She stood up, nearly throwing Hero off-balance as she got off of his lap. “We’re going to fix this. Beni is my dear friend, and yours. I’ve grown rather fond of Bea, too, and you two are in her corner. The best repayment for helping us love freely and fiercely is to make sure that they can as well!”

“You picked a firecracker, didn’t you, Hero?” Matthew leaned back and shook his head, smiling. “I’m in if you’re in. They got me off the hook as much as did you.”

“Well, then.” Hero looked between his friend and his fiance. “I guess we’re in cahoots. What brainchild are you cooking up, Claudia?”

“I am so glad you asked…”

Artist Spotlight: Magnolia Porter

Work Title: Eat His Heart in the Marketplace

Biography: Magnolia Porter, 24; I’m an illustrator and painter who enjoys figure expression, both grand and sentimental, what it means to be a creature, and exploiting my exposure to the ideas of holy and unholiness for symbolism material, especially while exploring a mixture thereof (“I’ll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife,” anyone?). This will be my first published art, outside of a fandom zine or two. I also dabble in creative writing, though it is not quite my breath and blood like art is. I daydream of fantasy worldbuilding, but unfortunately my troubles with plot have kept those worlds from expanding. Currently, I am in my fourth year of Artfight (go team steampunk!), I cannot stop listening to The Oh Hellos and Will Wood and the Tapeworms, and I am quite looking forward to the new Good Omens series.

Artist Spotlight: Cris Alborja

Work Title: Intimacy

I have done cover art for an anthology called Infiniteca by Retranca Editorial and comics for Altar Mutante, Nai dos Desterrados, and Abraxas en Cuarentena fanzines, as well as in Gaspariño 21 by Retranca Editorial.

Author Spotlight: Lyn Weaver

Biography: Lyn Weaver has been writing fanfiction for over a decade and original fiction for even longer. Her preferred genres are fantasy and horror, and her preferred tropes are ‘enemies to lovers’ and anything to do with identity issues. She won’t read a story if something bad happens to the cat.

Story Title: Can Virtue Hide Itself?

Tags: modern with superheroes

Teaser:

“Bea!”

Bea grimaced. “Your feet aren’t even on the tree, Hero. Hey, innocent bystander Hero definitely hasn’t met, you wouldn’t happen to have a ladder handy?”

Ursula grimaced back. Just because she lived alone didn’t mean she was a real adult. “I’m a high school student, why would I have a ladder?”

“Does your landlord—”

“I do have an anti-grav gun though. Hang on, I’ll get it.”

Both Hero and Bea looked shocked when Ursula came back, multi-colored anti-grav gun in hand.

Why?

Yeah, the device kinda looked like it’d been made by a balloon clown, but it worked like a dream. Bea flinched when Ursula pulled the trigger and remained stiff as she lifted off the branch, cradled in a sphere of wobbly gravity. Only when her feet were safely on the ground, and Ursula had turned the gun off, did Bea relax.

“That’s so cool!” Hero kicked off the tree and flew down.

Ursula coughed and looked away. “It was nothing. Why were two superheroes in my tree to begin with?”

Author Spotlight: Veronica Sloane

Biography: Veronica Sloane has authored a novel, several short stories, some poetry, and twenty-two years worth of fanfic. She lives with one lovely spouse, one rambunctious clever child, and one sleepy cat.

Story Title: The False Sweet Bait

Tags: noir, nonbinary character, pov first person

Teaser:

A smart tweed suit and, as a concession to the occasion, a string of my mother’s pearls would have to do for clothes. I kept to flats. Never knew when I’d have to run.

Claudio’s estate was outside the city, but I had a good car and the desire to speed. I arrived before the bulk of the fashionably late and parked myself, scandalizing the valet. The estate was the kind that had a fancy name and rose out of the cliff face like a fairy-tale castle. At night it shone like a golden beacon.

I took my time heading up, reminding myself of its entrances and exits; all the places a shady character might hide. So, naturally, I found one.

They were standing in the lee of the kitchen door, half-hidden by a jasmine bush. The white flowers bent around them as if to hide their lean form. They were dressed to the nines in a beautiful silk suit the color of the night sky and cufflinks that caught the starlight. The moon caught the sharp angles of their cheekbones and the gleaming black coif of their hair. All beauty and grace in one Benni Padua.

What an asshole.

“What are you doing here?” I barked, pleased when they fumbled with their fussy little notebook.

“I was invited.” They were the very picture of polite confusion. “And what are you doing here, Her Private Eyeness?”

Artist Spotlight: Joshua Beeking

Work Title: Melancholy

Biography: I’m Joshua Beeking, an illustrator from Québec City that works in both traditional and digital medias. I have been working on sharpening my skills for over 10 years. I received formal education at Quebec’s O’Sullivan College, where I earned a diploma in 2D/3D Animation and Rendering in 2012. I won first place at the UQAM digital creation contest in 2011 for best character designs.

I’m currently a full-time freelance artist with more than 200 commissions completed over the years, and aim to share my little touch of creativity with the world!

Artist Spotlight: Joey Hazell

Work Title: Cottage Country Comic AU

Biography: I’ve been drawing since my mom first put a crayon in my hand as a way to help me express my emotions. This resulted in bedroom walls getting covered in elaborate story-filled murals, and I haven’t really stopped since (though my choice of media has changed a bit). My pronouns are she/her, and I currently I reside in the Toronto area, trying to figure out how to make this comic-making, illustration-drawing thing work. With a strong love for narratives, my primary focus is on making fan art for whatever fandom has me most recently captivated, and trying to create my own queer, nerdy works of fiction to put out in the world.

Learn more about our Kickstarter Campaign now!

duckprintspress: (Default)

Have you seen our awesome notecard image created by Miss Aceriee (Instagram | @aceriee-art on Tumblr | Twitter) for our current Kickstarter campaign, And Seek (Not) to Alter Me: Queer Fanworks Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”?

Well, I doubt it’s surprising to learn that we put a lot of thought into which flags to represent with each flower, and which flags to include. We wanted to make a bouquet as diverse as our queer communities, as inclusive as impossible, and to reflect the range of queer identities featured in the book and among our authors and artists. It was really great to research the different flags and decide which ones we wanted, and where. Do you recognize them all?

Yes? WAY TO GO!

No? Here’s a quick key – listed in counter-clockwise order, starting at 9-o-clock:

Gerbera daisy – Pride flag (we opted for the Philadelphia flag – the brown and black are in the center, as a representation of how central BIPOC are to queer communities and history; we’d have used the Progress Pride flag but since we were already separately including the trans flag and intersex flag, we went with the Philadelphia flag instead)

Violet – genderqueer flag

Lily – asexual flag (these are also the colors of the demisexual flag)

Tulip – bisexual flag

Gladiola – has flowers for the lesbian flag (pink/orange – there are multiple lesbian flags, we use this one as it’s generally considered the most inclusive), the gay men’s flag (blue/green), the trans flag (white/blue/pink), and the aromantic and agender flags (both are green/black/grey)

(No longer only blue)bell – has flowers for the genderfluid flag (pink/blue/black/white), non-binary flag (yellow/purple/black/white), intersex flag (yellow with a circle), polyamory flag (red/blue/black), and pansexual flag (pink/yellow/blue)

We couldn’t include every Pride flag – there are far too many for that! – but we tried to incorporate all the most commonly used and most widely recognized. We wanted as many members of this community to see themselves in this arrangement as possible – but in the end, we’ll never be able to include everyone.

That’s where you, yes YOU, come in!

Do you wish the flowers had been assigned flags differently? Is there a flag not represented that you wish was? Would you have handled the coloring of the image in an alternative manner? Do you love it exactly as it is but like to play with colors?

YOU ARE VALID AND WE SUPPORT YOU!

AND, we’d love to see your work! This is your moment – because we asked Miss Aceriee to make a coloring page version of our note card! All the line art, none of the colors, so you can let your imagination go wild!

So, here you go – a lovely blank version of our note card art:

Or, you can download a high resolution, *enormous* version, in a zip from our website – here.

If you choose to draw with our coloring page, we’d love to see – and share – your work! @ us on the social media platform of your choice – we’re duckprintspress on Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, Pillowfort, Dreamwidth, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Archive of Our Own (…okay, you can’t ping us there, but if you post there, give us the link and we can make a collection of works!) – and show us how YOU’D use this gorgeous bouquet of flowers to celebrate the rainbow variety of queer identities!

(Use a different social media platform and wish Duck Prints Press had a presence there so you could follow us and ping us in your creations there? Let us know, we’ll see what we can do to add the platform of your preference!)

Have a wonderful, and very queer, weekend, everyone. And happy Trans Day of Visibility (…slightly belated, but we think trans folk deserve many many days of visibility, and we hate April Fool’s day, so. Two day celebration!)!

Author Spotlight: Theresa Tanner

Biography: Theresa Tanner (she/her): My father’s family was in newspaper journalism, and he taught me how to get to the heart of a story and how to proofread. My mom was an Army doctor, and her family included a long history of educators. I grew up to teach high school science and write stories, so I’d like to think both sides would be proud of me. When I retire from teaching, I plan to pursue writing as my second full-time career. When not teaching or writing, I enjoy playing with my cat, video games, knitting, listening to music, streaming TV, and, of course, reading. I live in West Texas now, but have lived in Maryland and Germany, and have traveled through much of the United States and Western Europe.

I’ve written several novels with the help of NaNoWriMo, although none are yet published. I have several hundred works on Archive of Our Own, primarily in the Supernatural and Yuri!!! on Ice fandoms. I currently also enjoy Miraculous Ladybug, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Boku no Hero Academia, Star Wars, Star Trek, Mass Effect, and The Lord of the Rings.

Story Title: Hero’s Moon

Tags: love letters, misunderstandings, mistaken identity, mlw, pining, setting: college, setting, college, wlw

Teaser:

“You’re not cursed. No such thing as curses.” Beatrice quickly tossed the letter she hadn’t quite finished toward the trash, then picked up the phone. It was open to Hannah’s Instagram, recognizable by her profile picture: a basketball hanging in space like a sun, with a tennis ball and a golf ball “in orbit” like a planet. Beatrice had been avoiding Hannah’s social media; she did not care to find out Dick Boy was real and not a figment of Hannah’s imagination. “Okay, what’s my cousin got to do with anything?”

Another long groan, and Claudia tangled her fingers in her long black hair, pulling it ever so slightly. “She’s so… perfect! I always knew there was never much hope. Only a fool’s hope.”

“Uh-oh. You’re quoting Gandalf. This is serious.” Beatrice looked more closely at Hannah’s Instagram feed. The first picture was of the moon. That made sense—every full moon, Hannah took pictures and shared the best one, captioned with a fun fact about the moon. Next post down was a picture of Uranus with a moon in transit, captioned I wonder if Margaret ever gets tired of the jokes about mooning her dad? “Who’s Margaret?”

Author Spotlight: Nova Mason

Biography: Nova Mason spent a significant portion of her childhood fantasizing about dragons, spaceships, and other worlds. She is now, allegedly, a grown-up, with two kids, and more varied interests. Dragons, spaceships, and other worlds are still pretty high in the list, though.

Story Title: The Journal of Don Pedro; or, the Straights Are At It Again

Tags: asexual character, canon compliant, mistaken character death, pov first person

Teaser:

Well, if I cannot throw off the scent of the wedding-hounds by a marriage of my own, then I shall have to throw them on the trail of another. Luck is with me, for Beatrice proposed two targets for Cupid’s bow: my brother, and Benedick. I confess I am not confident of my brother’s adequacy for the task. She finds him handsome, but I know not his inclinations for love. I know Benedick. He rails against the sacrament and the very notion of love; I believe his fiery passion against it can be diverted to flow another direction. Leonato, Claudio, and Hero have joined my cabal and vowed to assist. With luck, Leonato will gain not only a son, but also a promised nephew before the wedding bells ring on Monday.

Artist Spotlight: Xanthe P. Russell

Work Title: Duly Noted

Biography: I’m Xanthe, she/they, a 23 year old queer freelance artist based in the United Kingdom. I am primarily a portrait artist who specialises in using portraiture as a way of expressing my love for both the subject and the art world in general. I mainly work digitally, although love to dabble in traditional art from time to time (such as pencils, paints, embroidery, etc), and am constantly looking to push the boundaries of what my art can be! I recently graduated with a BA in History of Art, and often will use artists of the past and present as inspirations for my work. My art has been featured in a few primarily online magazines, such as the Kraze and MouthingOff, along with some fan-zine and independent projects.

My work is a mix of fan art and original character designs. I have a wide range of fandoms that I’ve been involved in over the years, but one that has remained consistent (and was also what got me interested in digital art back in 2013) is the Kpop fandom. Fandoms in general have been places where I’ve met a lot of really talented and lovely people who have helped inspire and motivate me as a creative person! I also have a love for music and writing, and have written a lot of my own music and stories in my spare time. Being creative has always been a big and happy part of my life, and I love being able to share that creativity with the world!

Artist Spotlight: Pimmy Oldham

Work Title: Taming My Wild Heart to Thy Loving Hand

Biography: A quirky queer published artist and hobby writer, mainly working in digital media for the last five years, but often drifting back into traditional media out of nostalgia for my long deserted youth.

My home is in the UK, my heart is in Europe, and my head is usually orbiting Pluto (she’s still a planet to me).

Author Spotlight: R. L. Houck

Biography: R. L. Houck (she/her) still has one of the first stories she ever wrote, all the way back from elementary school. It was about flightless penguins reaching the sun and was a good indication of her boundless imagination and her love of animals. The latter became a full-time veterinary career; the former keeps her occupied with fanfiction and original fiction in her downtime.

She’s sometimes found wandering the woods around her house in Virginia with her two dogs. If not there, she’s sitting on the couch, catching up on a Netflix series, and smothered by her six cats. Sometimes, there’s even space for her wife.

Story Title: Much Ruckus

Tags: angst with a happy ending, established relationship, found family, friendship, science fiction

Teaser:

“Do you think B loves him in return?” Claudia looked down to see one mischievous brown eye sleepily peeking back up at her.

“The lady doth protest too much, methinks. So, now we just have to get them to realize how they feel about each other. Shouldn’t be hard.”

Claudia rather thought it would be hard, knowing B and Ben. But, Hera was pretty stubborn as well.

“Nap first, though?” Claudia suspected Hera was three quarters asleep and wouldn’t be good for any other planning.

“Mmm. Nap first,” Hera agreed. “Then we need to figure out”—she yawned again—“what to do about Jon.”

“Don’t forget the robbery. It’s the whole reason we’re all here.”

Hera’s answer was a tiny kitten snore. Claudia smiled helplessly at the top of her mate’s head. There was a lot to do, but for now, it could wait.

Nap first, after all.

Story Title: ASS[U]ME: A Queer Love Story

Tags: characters in drag, period-typical homophobia, period-typical understandings of gender and sexuality, setting: 2000 – 2010

Teaser:

Bustychick Arnold always started her act with a song, and this time was no different. A song of heartbreak and sadness, tonight, to match her mood. Her best friend Claude had joined the rest of the guys in the unit on the base laughing about “men in dresses,” and while she’d done her best to join in, Bustychick couldn’t help but be heartbroken by it.

Her large wig had hair piled high on her head, far bigger than could be managed without some serious hairspray or extremely curly hair. It was bright pink, with a faux military cap pinned jauntily on top. Her hair didn’t move as she swung her hips in time to the music, not made for the kind of subtlety other drag queens went for in their outfits. It reminded her sometimes of the helmets she wore in military life. Her outfit now, ironically, was just as much a form of armor as that was.

A pink camouflage mini-dress, the skirt flared out at her waist with layers and layers of petticoats and tulle. Her padded bra gave her an ample bosom, though the fact that she was not particularly gifted in that department naturally meant that her neckline was best suited high to hide the space where the bra ended. Today it was a mock turtleneck halter-top.

Her makeup was on point, contoured to hide her square jawline and sharp nose, with big eyes and high, painted-on eyebrows over her waxed-down real ones. Bright pink lipstick completed the look.

When the song ended she breathed hard, smiling at her audience as they clapped and cheered.

“Now, now. I have some things to say before we end this!” she finally interrupted, and the crowd quieted.

“How do you all like living in this town with its military base?” Bustychick asked, to the sound of loud boos. “I thought so! We all know how well the military treats us! Why, even just a hint of queerness can end a good man’s career, as if we were all traitors to the cause!”

The jeering got louder, and someone in the back shouted, “Preach it, sister!”

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell might keep us in the military sometimes, but only under a cloak of shame! DADT was needed years ago, but now? Now it holds us back! A queer man deserves to be able to share his benefits with his male partner just like a straight man can!”

The crowd was fully riled up now, calls of “Amen!” sounding from all around.

Artist Spotlight: Rima Sweet

Work Title: Let Me Be That I Am

Biography: I am a Luxembourg/Europe-based Media Writer. My preferred pronouns are she/her. I’ve never had an art piece published before, but a small screenplay made it into my university’s 10th anniversary anthology.

Growing up, art and literature were my passion. As an absolute language nerd, I went on to study English Literature and Linguistics with a heavy focus on Shakespeare, with Sociology as a Minor. Later, I switched to a BTS (“Brevet de Technicien Supérieur”) in Media Writing, which focused more on content creation for various outlets of media, be that visual, audio, print, online, film, journalism…what have you.

Drawing and painting have always been my preferred ways of expressing myself. I was gifted my first set of coloured pencils when I was three years old. Since then, there’s practically always been some sort of drawing utensil in my hand. I love to play with lighting, and my favourite scenes to depict are heartfelt moments with much emotion. I started drawing fan art when I was a teenager, and I am still enjoying it tremendously to this day. Outside of fandom, I like to draw and paint horses, especially in movement, and landscapes. I specialise in digital art, but I want to get back into watercolour and gouache.

At the moment, my main fandom is “The Untamed”, or “The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation.” Outside of that, I enjoy Marvel movies, fantasy/YA novels, and French poetry. When I’m not working or drawing, you can catch me crocheting or preparing some kind of food, which I love to share with my long-term partner.
