A graphic over a washed-out photograph of an exapnsive sky, a sea, and two forested islands. Text at the top reads "Pre-order options for The Salt in the Sea by J. D. Rivers." Below this, center, is a book cover depicting two men, one blonde and fair, the other black-haired with medium tone skin, in a loose, tender embrace, one kissing the other's forehead, before a wave-like background with a blood-red sun and dark sky behind them. This is labeled "The Salt in the Sea E-book and trade paperback." Beside it, there's a picture of a small candle in a tin labeled "seaside candle," the same artwork but with a large area of more waves beside the pair labeled "art print of the front cover," and the artwork again but made narrow and focused on the men, labeled "Thoma & Victor bookmark." In the lower part of the graphic is a header that reads "Pre-Order Bundles," with two listed: trade paperback + e-book bundle, accompanied by the cover art twice more (once with a book download symbol), and book _ merchandise bundle, which shows all the items already described grouped together in one big bundle.

The pre-order campaign for our next novella, The Salt in the Sea by J. D. Rivers, are open NOW through 8 a.m. Eastern time on April 15th!

A downtrodden ex-soldier.

After leaving the military, werewolf Victor is shunned in his civilian life. Money is tight, so when an ex-comrade offers him an easy job—getting a package from an island—he jumps at the chance.

A lost inn-owner.

When Selkie Thoma opens the door to a knocking patron, he wants to close it again immediately. Standing before him is Victor, his one-night stand from three years ago. The last thing Thoma wants is to have to explain why he left that night.

As Victor and Thoma cross paths unexpectedly, emotions flare anew. But Victor is only on the island for a week, and Thoma can’t face his past, the consequences of his decisions, or the resulting condemnation from his sea-going selkie family.

A dead body in a post office.

When a corpse is discovered, fingers throughout the community point at Victor. With time running out before justice is served, it’s on Thoma to find out the truth. Because on the island justice is deadly.

How the Story Ends by Genevieve Maxwell

modern with magic, hauntings, sapphic vibes

Excerpt:
Bethany gathered a reasonable pile of books in her hands, their pages filled with so many memories. She smiled with warmth recalling her favorite scenes and passages. She set the pile on one of the middle shelves against the left-hand side, angling the last book in the hopes they wouldn’t all slide down before she could get the next batch placed. Bethany didn’t own bookends, as her personal library contained more than enough books to fill the shelves.

Bethany turned back to the box for more books.

Whump.

Available to backers at the $10/month level and higher.

Last Boat to Heaven by Max Jason Peterson

surreal apocalyptic magical realism with horror and death themes and a trans main character

Excerpt:
I knew that the end of the world was near when I woke one morning with my dead love in bed beside me. She hadn’t been gone long, so it didn’t seem strange to wake to her smile, that languid arm along my shoulder. Love doesn’t die, just fades away, and this one was fresh, so near I knew that one morning I would cut myself shaving, a bit too deep under the chin, and they’d find me on the floor.

“Hello,” said my Brynn, eyes bright beneath sandy bangs. “Wake up, lover.”

Available to backers at the $10/month level and higher.

-

Tainted by J. D. Harlock

fantasy with horror vibes, family feels, enduring The Terrors together

Excerpt:
The cold night had stretched on for longer than anyone in the lone cottage could remember. Windows had been bolted up with whatever the family could get their hands on, and every single hole and crack in the makeshift roof was carefully blocked with leftover pots and pans. Those who believed it was better to sleep through the whole affair retired early, hoping rest would ease their minds, but they found little comfort in the straw beds and animal-skin pillows they now had to get accustomed to.

This left Umm Kamila and her granddaughter, Nahla, by themselves in the parlor—the former humming hymns she recollected from a childhood that felt so long ago, the latter fidgeting with a contraption she had found in the last scavenge with the children of the other families stranded in their village.

Available to backers at the $7/month level and higher.

Tough Job, Sweet Reward by Samantha M. Piper

sapphics! in! spaaaaaace! (and having sex)

Excerpt:
Cam dropped her towel and reached for the drawer that held their sleep clothes, but Mads’s hand darted out to stop her with a touch to her upper arm.
“Ah ah ah,” Mads said softly. Cam frowned in confusion. “First things first, I think you need a bit of self-care after the day you had.” Mads trailed her fingers down Cam’s arm. “And since I know you won’t take care of yourself properly, I’ll do it.”

Available to backers at the $7/month level and higher.

We also recently released the November art reward for our backers at level $5/month and higher!

A square trim from a larger art piece, showing two white people's chins and the same people's hands clasped. Together they hold up a steaming bowl.

Samhain by Aceriee

Image is a trim of a larger piece.

Aceriee had this to say about the inspiration behind this piece: The illustration is (very) loosely inspired by an Irish myth about Morrigan and Dagda meeting on Samhain. Handfasting is an old tradition and Samhain represents new beginnings and rebirth. It’s also a day where the veil between the worlds are at their thinnest making it a perfect time to start something new while honoring lost loved ones.

Different versions available to different backers; all backers have access to at least one!

-

Patreon backers at the $10/month level and $25/month level who also back our current Kickstarter campaign for A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” will also get bonus extra merch: 5 notecards + envelopes featuring a fourth rainbow Pride peacock design by A. A. Weston!

Artwork of a peacock standing on a branch. The peacock is surrounded by a wide gold picture frame, which itself is surrounded by simple, old-fashioned wallpaper - except the wallpaper has a rainbow gradient.

M/M, Modern High School Setting, Mutual Pining Idiots to Lovers

Brady Jensen is excited to attend this year’s Halloween festival with his friends. It’s got hayrides, a corn maze, oodles of pumpkins, lots of fun things to do…and it’s got a haunted house.

Brady is not excited for the haunted house.

But at least his crush Nick is there to give him something to think about other than his fears…

This story is an alternate universe take on Nick Porter and Brady Jensen, the main characters of A. L. Heard’s novel “Hockey Bois.” No knowledge of the source material is needed to enjoy this story.

Title: A Cup and Company

F/NB, Coffee Shop Meet-Cute, the Ennui of Modern Wage Employment

Zoe hates her part-time job in telemarketing, but at least it pays the bills while she’s in graduate school, and at least it’s just down the street from the adorable Corner Café. When she stops in for pick-me-up and gets trapped in the café by a rainstorm, though, the last thing she expects is some company while she drinks her cup of rose chai latte.

We’ve got three new short stories out September 28th 2023!

Title: A Ghost for Halloween
Author: K. B. Vimes

General/No Relationship, Family and Siblings, Ghosts, Mourning and Grief, Child Point of View

In the spirit of Color by Owl Outerbridge, The Offered Ones by A. L. Heard, and The Fairy Garden by Rhosyn Goodfellow, K. B. Vimes continues our authors’ tradition of writing compelling stories that explore the fears and hopes attendant with raising children in the modern world.

Halloween is Maggie’s favorite day of the year; she just wishes she knew why her parents hate it so much, why they always refuse to go trick-or-treating with her, why her mother spends the night drunk. At least this year, she’s found another kid to go with her. He’s strange, but Maggie will overlook a lot if it means she gets to have a friend.

Title: Be Not Afraid
Author: Nicola Kapron

M/M, Angels and Demons and the Apocalypse Oh My!, the Hardest Part of the Post-Apocalypse is Finding a Job, There’s Only One Bed (but the Roommate Doesn’t Sleep)

Nicola Kapron returns with her seventh story published with Duck Prints Press, this time exploring how “the end of the world” can mean very different things depending on one’s circumstances.

Tora survives the end of the world, and so does his sister, even though he can’t escape the niggling feeling that one or both of them shouldn’t have. Still, that’s not his immediately problem. No, he’s more concerned about his demon roommate and his odd-job daily gig.

Title: Commute
Author: Eliot Lovell

F/F, the Inherent Awkwardness of Sitting Together on the Train, WLW Disaster Flirting

Fluffy f/f is one of our most popular short story genres. Eliot Lovell’s debut story with Duck Prints Press joins our extensive catalog of works by such authors as A. L. Heard, Violet J. Hayes, Annabeth Lynch, and D. V. Morse. You can check out all of our f/f general imprint titles here.

Eloise intensely dislikes when she has to work in the city, not least because of the commute by train. But the longer the beautiful woman sits across from her in the facing row of seats, the more she starts to think maybe commuting isn’t so bad…

Title: Chrysopoeia
Author: Zel Howland

Author Zel Howland, a contributor to our upcoming anthology Aether Beyond the Binary, publishes their first stand-alone story with Duck Prints Press!

Sort-of-One-Sided F/F (It’s Complicatedtm), Trapped Together, Everyone Needs to Use Their Words, Victorian Alchemy and Witchcraft

After Faith is found guilty of witchcraft, she’s subjected to the traditional punishment for her supposed crime: imprisonment for a month in a cave that may or may not hide a gateway to Hell in its unexplored depths.

But Faith isn’t a witch. She’s an alchemist. And while she could use alchemy to survive her imprisonment…if she’s alive when the townspeople return, she’ll be executed, because obviously only a witch could survive a month stoned-in with no food or water.

Even worse, Faith is increasingly sure that she’s not alone in this cave…

Story Teaser:

Her sneer of cold command pricked me, letting the blood from my veins. In the midst of all this pomp and circumstance, here in the haven that once housed my family, in the temple that once venerated our Goddesses, in the monument that once celebrated my people, I could strangle her.

“Why would you do this to me?” I cried, but she just scoffed.

“Laudable words coming from the woman who abandoned me and left me to die.”

This Saturday's release - our LAST Saturday release, as we're switching to a different schedule in June, marking the end of a short story series that has seen us release more than 40 titles since October - is an innocuous-looking story of a meeting of some rather unusual cats...and an incisive piece of political commentary on many of our current issues with demagoguery!

Old Whiskers, distinguished cat of stature, has called a meeting of the cats of the alley with a simple goal: convince them of the necessity of rebelling against humanity. Sure, the humans scoop the litter boxes and provide pets, but that doesn't excuse their heinous crimes!

“Fluffer Nutter, were you not asked to exit your own house to relieve yourself in the streets like some low-bred rapscallion!” “It’s true, I was, boss…”
“Aha!”
“Wait… how did he know that…?”
Old Whiskers then turned to Mrs. Furball, a house cat who was as agreeable as she was aloof.
“And Mrs. Furball, wasn’t Mr. Furball’s masculinity so cruelly stripped from him when he was but a young tomcat?”

What he doesn't expect is that anyone will try to resist his call to action...

Old Whiskers lashed out, yowling at them and stomping his legs—then he promptly turned back to Little Tugger. “And because we are an eleemosynary organization, I have decided to make you an offer…”
“I—” Little Tugger interrupted.
“If you behave yourself, I’m prepared to offer you a position in our organization.”
“And what would this position be, might I ask?” Little Tugger tapped his paw impatiently.
“You, Little Tugger, will be appointed the leader of the opposition in our fledgling enterprise.”

An Odd Gathering of Peculiar Cats by J. D. Harlock is thoughtful and thought-provoking, and you're not gonna want to miss it!
