Aug. 14th, 2024 09:01 amWhat did you read this week?
- Flamer by Mike Curato (modern, coming of age for a gay teen, trigger warnings for religious trauma, homophobia, bullying, abuse, and suicide attempt): a fictionalized account of the author's own childhood, about a guy, the summer before he goes to high school in the mid 1990s, dealing with figuring out his sexuality as a Catholic at a boy's summer camp. It's not a book I needed to read, but for people who have dealt with any of these things, I think it's a book that would be The Right Book for a lot of folks, it was pretty good.
- Akatsuki no Yona vol. 3 by Mizuho Kusanagi (fantasy shojo manga): methinks I see the reverse harem growing. Anyway, yeah. Read another volume. Still like it. Will keep going.
What are you currently reading?
- How to Survive as a Villain by Yi Yi Yi Yi (historical/fantasy China, transmigration, m/m): I finished the Rosmei translation of volume 1 last Wednesday night and immediately turned around and switched to reading the fantranslation. I finished the main story yesterday evening - I felt really crappy yesterday, so I stopped working early and just kinda curled up on the couch and read all day. I still have the extras left. The last, like, four chapters were pretty meh, but considering there are over 200 chapters, and I genuinely enjoyed all the rest, I'm calling it a win. The only thing I wish, like... it's pretty clear why Yan Heqing loves and is devoted to Xiao Yu An. I wish it was as clear why Xiao Yu An felt as he did. Anyway. Definitely will buy the rest from Rosmei.
I'm also still reading Legend of the Condor Heroes but made no progress last week, and the coming week isn't promising either (I'm vending for the entirity of both weekends, which is just so much work, I end up without much reading time).
What are you reading next?
The next graphic novels on my pile are Blue Flag vol, uh, 6 I think, and Dead End volume 2. I expect to take a break from HSAV tonight and focus on getting through some graphic novels, in part so I can return stuff to the library tomorrow before I leave to go vend on Friday, so hopefully I'll make some progress. For novel, next up after HSAV are the other two books by Katherine Addison set in the The Goblin Emperor world. They're both short, so I don't expect them to take me very long. If I don't enjoy the second more than I enjoyed the first, I might not even read the third, but I haven't decided yet.
