Jan. 15th, 2025 09:23 am1. What are you currently reading?
My current book-in-progress is The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish vol. 3 and. oh. sigh. so insanely disappointing. Book 3 goes all-in on one of the things that, when I look at fic tags, is an instant nope for me (kidfic) and that's like. the entire driving plot of this book, and reads to me as written by someone who knows virtually nothing about either parenthood or babies and is hoping to be able to foist off all the stuff that makes no sense as "but they're magic fish babies." Which. They are magic fish babies. But I hate every word of it. I'm only resisting skimming because it's a pretty quick read and because I do still genuinely care about and am interested in the political parts of the plot, so I'm gonna try to plod through.
2. What have you recently finished?
Graphic Novels I Read This Week:
- Dungeon Critters by Sara Goetter and Natalie Riess (fantasy, wlw and mlm, character who is ambiguously nb or trans): this was surprise middle grade graphic novel find; I borrowed it cause it looked like the kind of thing my daughter would like (and she did) but surprise it was hella queer. And very cute and fun. Do recommend.
- Kaiju No. 8 vol. 5 - 10 by Naoya Matsumoto: yeah I mainlined every volume I could get my hands on. I literally have the anime (dub) on right now while I'm typing this.
- Too Close to Fall in Love by Akira Makata (modern step siblings mlm): relatively mediocre modern BL manga. There was just never any sense what these two guys liked about each other other than attraction at first sight (they're step-siblings but meet as adults, when their respective dads move in together).
- The Cat Proposed by Dento Hayane (modern with magic mlm): in comparison to the previous, this one was very cute and their mutual interest very well developed. I liked it.
- Yona of the Dawn vol. 6 by Mizuho Kusanagi (fantasy shoujo): getting my NYPL and Brooklyn PL library cards got me access to more volumes of this, so I can finally keep going. Took me a decent amount of the volume to even remember what was going on. Wish I could figure out what direction the interpersonal relationships are going.
- Galaxy: The Prettiest Star by Jadzia Axelrod and Jess Taylor (DC 'verse, trans (semi-allegorical) mc, wlw): just finished this this morning; very nice story, less plotty than I'd expected, like, they talk about plot in the distance and I kept thinking it'd arrive but it doesn't, which is fine but not what I was expecting. Sweet, quick read, no DC knowledge needed. Main love interest uses a prosthetic leg/is an amputee due to surviving a car accident.
3. What will you be reading next?
My next-up novel is still The Fall of the House of Tatterly by Shanna Miles. After that, I rearranged my TBR a little cause the last volume of Sha Po Lang/Stars of Chaos by priest came out yesterday; I'll read all five vols. of that after. My next up graphic novel from the library is Hakumei & Mikochi: Tiny Little Life in the Woods vol. 1 by Takuto Kashiki. I heard it's cute. so. I'm giving it a try.
