1. What are you currently reading?

I've read about a fifth of Delta of Venus by Anais Nin. I'm going slow cause I'm generally reading whole stories at a time so if I don't have time for the next story I often don't even start. I also started the next volume of Haikyuu and I'll have to finish it soon cause it's due in like 3 days.

2. What have you finished reading the past week?

Graphic Novels

  • Girlmode by Magdalene Visaggio (modern, HS, trans girl mc): this more than anything felt like a retelling of Emma from the point of view of that girl that Emma tries to make cool. It's not billed as that and doesn't hit all the same plot beats but the vibes were unmistakeable. And, as I said with Mismatched last month...I still hate Emma, lmao.
  • The Sweetness Between Us (modern, lots of background queer, disability focus): I picked this up because I thought the characters on the cover were two girls kissing, but it turns out one is a boy. Nonetheless, a lot of the background characters were genderqueer and such so it still fits my usual reading I guess. The main focus was two young people who come down with surprise chronic conditions (Type 1 Diabetes on the one hand, vampirism on the other lmao) and bond over vampires being able to measure sugar levels and the shared stresses of being young people with conditions that interfere with day-to-day life.
  • Becoming Who We Are: Real Stories About Growing Up Trans (exactly what it says on the tin): very nice and diverse collection of autobiographical graphic novel short stories. Many of the artists were also queer, though the writers were the focus of the stories.
  • Demon Slayer/Kimetsu no Yaiba vol. 2 by Koyoharu Gotouge: looks like we're digging into the actual plot now. The stakes have escalated very quickly, lol. Given how shounen usually goes, though, I'm assuming there's a bigger bad lurking in the background.
  • The Hidden Witch by Molly Knox Ostertag (modern with magic, allegory to being trans): enjoyable sequel to The Witch Boy, which I read earlier this year. I'd been excited for this one and it didn't disappoint.
  • I Think Our Son is Gay vol. 2 by Okura (what it says on the tin; he is gay): continues to be cute and enjoyable and a quick read.

3. What will you be reading next?

I reorganized my TBR this morning, because I could (we had no heat for 2 weeks and I didn't want to do any household chores that weren't absolutely essential, but we've got heat back now yay!). Next physical graphic novels are the Apothecary Diaries vol. 1 to 11, which I'm borrowing from tryslora. My Libby borrow of Haikyuu also expires in 4 days, and I've got Cut-Over Criteria by Koala Omugi for only 8 more days so I'll probably read that too. Oh and my last book from the library, uh, crap, I can't remember the title. Next novel is The Fall of the House of Tatterly by Shanna Miles but I doubt I'll get to it this week.

A banner graphic with artwork of two peahens outlined in pink against a pale pink background. Text reads "A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice." In the upper right corner is the Duck Prints Press logo, and beneath that is the Kickstarter "Projects We Love" badge.

The Kickstarter campaign to fund the publishing of A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” ends at 1:15 p.m. Eastern time on December 5th 2024!

That means, as I’m posting this, you only have 27 hours left, and the minutes are ticking by. We’re funded, but we’d love your help to hit a stretch goal and to knock our initial goal out of the park. It’s not your last chance to get this book – we’ll publish it for all after we finish campaign fulfillment, and late pledges are enabled for just the print book and e-book – but you’ll get it well ahead of anyone else, and it may be the only chance to get our awesome merchandise, depending how many extras we end up post-fulfillment!

A graphic on a pink background. It shows two identical book covers for "A Truth Universally Acknowledged," one with a download arrow over it, and it also shows: an enamel pin design of a fountain pen and text reading "love ardent love"; three peacock images with rainbow in different parts of the image; a bookmark image with many flowers, an art print of the full cover art sans text, a small peacock sticker, and artwork of a peacock in a fan shape.

Wondering what it’s all about? Well…

With this third installment in our Queer Fanworks Inspired By… anthology series, we set out to explore the truth by which we at Duck Prints Press live: that a classic work without a single canonically queer character must be in want of a very LGBTQIA+ makeover! A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, with 21 short stories and 20 full-page color artworks, is just that. 38 creators have contributed to this project, drawing inspiration from Pride and Prejudice’s characters and story to create delightful, thoughtful, intriguing, and (of course) very queer fanworks and Pride and Prejudice-inspired original works. For this collection, we encouraged our creators to focus on Sapphic/wlw relationships and/or transgender and genderqueer interpretations for their inspiration, though those are definitely not the only types of queer we’ve fit into this diverse collection.
