1. What are you currently reading?

I'm currently reading Rose and Renaissance vol. 2 by Zhi Chu, and it's honestly hard to put down.

2. What have you recently finished?

  • AWM: PUBG by Man Man He Qi Duo (modern danmei): I finished this! Overall, I enjoyed it. I usually don't like a gong this prone to teasing and boundary-pushing, but Qi Zui was in general so genuinely respectful of the boundaries, like, he'd play with them but stopped instantly whenever he made Yu Yang uncomfortable, so it didn't bother me much compared to other things I've read with a similar dynamic.
  • Rose and Renaissance vol. 1 by Zhi Chu (modern danmei): I knew absolutely nothing about this book when I started it, much less when I bought the four-volume set, and so far I'm really, really enjoying it. The premise is "popular fanartist ends up cast on a reality show with their actor-idol (who they also want to fuck senseless) but the actor-idol isn't buying the fanartist's sweet-and-innocent act for a second." The main character is a wonderful horrible bundle of past abuse and insecurities and bad choices and "no one can love me" vibes. The ml is falling so hard all while managing to be somehow oblivious, while also terminally assuming the absolute worst about the mc (like, mc is bad, but ml assumes terrible). It's all a bit toxic but it's also explicitly acknowledged as toxic - Zhi Chu clearly knows what they're about, and it's really working for me, ship-dynamic wise. Also the setting is a reality escape room show and the scenarios for that have been pretty cool.
  • Indiginerds edited by Alina Pete (modern stories of North American indigenous people who are nerds; two of the stories include wlw): a nice little anthology of graphic short stories about modern indigenous life in the US and Canada. It didn't feel as focused on the "nerd" part as I'd expected? But I still thought it was a solid collection and I loved the different narrative and artistic styles.

...and that's it. Very few graphic novels. I got too absorbed by Rose and Renaissance, oops...

3. What will you be reading next?

Well, I put Delta of Venus by Anais Nin back into my TBR because I just couldn't force myself right now (I'm having a rough period related to family stuff with my daughter), but I'm not gonna even consider reading it until I finish Rose and Renaissance (which is four volumes total and I have them all). My next-up "graphic novel I don't own" is the LAST one I currently have from the library, which is Dungeon Meshi vol. 2, but I'll be going to the library once, or maybe twice, this week, so may grab more. I've also got the graphic novels I borrowed from Tris Lawrence.

Happy Asexuality Awareness Week 2024!! Last year, we celebrated this week with 15 of our favorite books; this year, we’ve put together a list of 20 – some repeats, most not! As always, our lists include both works with explicit representation and those with ~vibes~ that spoke to the people who contributed to the list. The contributors to the list are: May Barros, Linnea Peterson, Shea Sullivan, Nina Waters, Shadaras, Alex and 2 anonymous contributors.
